Sterling silver Brown Scapular bracelet with paracord and a Spanish flag detail. It features Our Lady of Mount Carmel on one side and the Sacred Heart of Jesus on the other.

What is the SCAPULAR? The Brown Scapular of Our Lady of Mount Carmel is an outward sign of Marian devotion, expressing consecration to the Blessed Virgin Mary through affiliation with the Carmelite Order and trust in her maternal protection. The Brown Scapular is a sacramental; that is, according to the Second Vatican Council, “a sacred sign which bears a resemblance to the sacraments and signifies effects, particularly of a spiritual nature, which are obtained through the intercession of the Church” (S.C. 60).

Those who wear the scapular should strive to keep the Blessed Virgin Mary always in mind and seek to imitate her virtues, her life, and her way of acting, following her words: “Behold the handmaid of the Lord; let it be done to me according to your word.”

In addition to the promise of salvation for those who die wearing it, the Brown Scapular is also associated with the so-called Sabbatine Privilege: “I want you to announce to the Carmelites and their confraternity: those who wear the Scapular, observe chastity according to their state in life, and pray the Divine Office—or, if they cannot read, abstain from eating meat on Wednesdays and Saturdays—if they go to purgatory, I will ensure that their souls are taken to heaven as soon as possible, especially on the Saturday following their death.”

The word scapular comes from the Latin scapula and refers to the garment worn by certain religious orders, such as the Carmelites, symbolizing the yoke of Christ. This devotional scapular, when imposed by a priest, is associated with two great promises of the Virgin Mary:

“Whoever dies wearing the Scapular will not suffer the fire of hell.”
“I, the Mother of Mercy, will free from purgatory and lead to heaven, on the Saturday after death, all those who have worn my Scapular.”
